MNG (Multiple-image Network Graphics) is a raster graphics format for animated images. It is closely related to the PNG (Portable Network Graphics) format and shares many of its features, including lossless compression. MNG was designed as a more advanced and flexible alternative to GIF (Graphics Interchange Format), offering better compression, support for truecolor images, and alpha transparency. Unlike GIF, MNG supports multiple frames, allowing for animations and complex image sequences. It also includes features like delta frames (only storing the differences between frames), allowing for more efficient compression of animations with minimal changes between frames. MNG supports various image manipulation techniques, including scaling, rotation, and color correction. While MNG offered significant advantages over GIF, it never achieved widespread adoption, partly due to the complexity of the format and the emergence of other animation formats like animated PNG (APNG) and WebP.
